Journal of Equine Science |
| —NOTES FOR AUTHORS— |
Revised on May 28, 2026
1. General Information
The Journal of Equine Science (JES) is the official journal of the Japanese Society of Equine Science and is to be issued quarterly. Unpublished Full Papers, Notes (Case Reports), and Review articles related to all the fields of equine science are accepted. The Journal will also involve articles invited by the editorial board. All the manuscripts are single-blind peer-reviewed by two reviewers or more if necessary, and accepted for publication based on editorial assessment. Texts must be written in English.
2. Ethical guidelines
Before submitting a manuscript, authors should carefully read and comply with the following ethical guidelines. Manuscript judged by the editorial board as not compliant with these standards may be rejected. Manuscript may be also rejected or retracted even after it has been accepted or published.
2.1 Duplicate submission
Submission to JES should only be made if the manuscript has not been submitted or published previously, is not currently in press or under consideration for publication in other journals (even in part or any language). However, this does not apply to reports by public or private research institutions, research grant reports and theses. If authors choose to submit their manuscript to other journals prior to a final decision on acceptance by JES, they should withdraw the submission to JES first.
2.2 Originality
Manuscripts are checked by the originality detection service. Manuscripts that are judged as lacking in originality are rejected.
2.3 Authorship
The list and order of authors should be confirmed at the time of submitting the manuscript to JES. Submitting a manuscript to JES signifies that all authors have confirmed and approved the author list and the final version of the manuscript. In principle, any alteration to the author list after submission is unacceptable without substantial reason.
2.4 Preprint
JES permits authors to register their manuscript on preprint servers officially approved by relevant research communities prior to or simultaneously with submission to JES. Manuscripts under reviewing, accepted for publication, or published in JES cannot be registered on preprint servers. However, authors are not prohibited from registering a link to the published paper on a preprint server.
2.5 Image manipulation
Manipulation of images should be kept to a minimum and processing should be applied to entire image within the standard ranges accepted by relevant research communities. In the case of significant modifications, this should be clearly specified in their manuscript. All images in the manuscript should accurately reflect the original data. Authors should submit unprocessed original images upon request of the editorial board.
2.6 Animal experiments/experiments using human-derived samples
Authors of manuscript describing experiments involving animals or animal-derived samples should specify that the study was conducted in accordance with the guidelines established by their institutions and that it was approved by the animal experiment committees within their institutions.
Authors of manuscript describing experiments involving humans or human-derived samples should specify that the study was conducted conforming to the fundamental rules listed in the Helsinki Declaration or the guidelines established by their institutions. Manuscripts judged as non-compliant in this respect may be rejected.
2.7 Experiments using genetically modified organisms
Authors of manuscripts describing experiments using genetically modified organisms should specify that the study was conducted in accordance with the guidelines established by their institutions.
2.8 Conflict of interest (COI)
Authors should disclose a conflict-of-interest regarding the manuscript submitted. Appropriate declarations even if there are none to declare should be included in their manuscript.
3. Open access
The articles of JES are available in J-STAGE, a platform for scholarly publications managed by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), and PubMed Central (PMC).
4. Charge for the publication of the article
The author will be charged for the following expenses.
(1) Type-setting and printing of the portion of the text exceeding the length prescribed in 6. (4) required for additional charge, ¥20,000 (Japanese yen), per one printed page.
(2) Color printing when the Editorial Board regards necessary.
(3) Revising English language when the Editorial Board regards necessary.
(4) Tracing charge when the Editorial Board regards necessary.

The name of the corresponding author and e-mail address for contact should be included. The running head, not exceeding 6 words, should be typewritten in capital letters. The lower half of the first page should be left blank.
(2) The second page of each Full paper and Review article should contain an Abstract (250 words or less) and key words (5 or less in alphabetical order). For a Note, it should contain an Abstract (120 words or less) and key words (4 or less in alphabetical order).
(3) The description on and after the third page of a Full paper should be made, in principle, in the following order: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conflict of Interest, Acknowledgments, References, and Figure Legends. For a Note, such captions should not be given except Conflict of Interest, Acknowledgments, References, and Figure Legends.
(4) The length of the papers, including the Tables, Figures and any other appendices, should not exceed 8 pages for a Full paper and a Review article and 4 for a Note (Case Report). One printed page without tables, or figures may contain around 600 words.

(7) The proper nouns should begin with capital letters. The scientific terms of animals, plants and microorganisms should be italicized.
(8) Arabic numerals and SI units should be used for numbers and units and abbreviations should be used after having been initially explained.
